Why Website Speed Matters More Than Ever

In 2026, patience for slow websites has evaporated. Studies consistently show that 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than 3 seconds to load. Google has made Core Web Vitals a ranking factor. And with competitors just a click away, a slow site is quite literally losing you money.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Amazon found that every 100ms of latency cost them 1% in sales. Google found that a half-second delay in search results caused a 20% drop in traffic. For small businesses, the impact is proportionally even larger — you can't afford to lose a single potential customer to a loading spinner.

Core Web Vitals — Google's metrics for user experience — measure three things: how fast content loads (LCP), how quickly the page becomes interactive (INP), and how stable the layout is during loading (CLS). Scoring well on these metrics directly affects your search rankings.

Common Performance Killers

The most common culprits we see are unoptimised images, too many plugins, cheap hosting, render-blocking JavaScript, and no caching. A typical WordPress site we audit for the first time has 3-5MB of uncompressed images, 15-20 HTTP requests for CSS and JavaScript files, and no server-side caching whatsoever.

The fix doesn't have to be complicated. Converting images to WebP, implementing a caching plugin, enabling GZIP compression, and removing unused plugins can often cut load times by 50-70% with just a few hours of work.

Our Performance Stack

At Rigorous Digital, every site we build is performance-optimised from day one. We use quality managed hosting, implement server-side and browser caching, optimise and lazy-load images, minify CSS and JavaScript, and regularly audit performance using Lighthouse and WebPageTest. The result: sites that consistently score 90+ on Google PageSpeed Insights.

Start Measuring Today

The first step is knowing where you stand. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev) and see your scores. If you're below 80, there's significant room for improvement — and we'd be happy to help you get there.
