As an avid reader, I have gone through many business books. I have to say, even amongst the best sellers, some have been more helpful than others. There are reams of titles available, and we only have so many hours in the day. To save you some time deciding which are worth reading, here are my top four book recommendations for other Agency owners.
A bit of a business book classic. It’s a lengthy book but written in a style that helps you move through it quickly. It’s got a lot of key lessons that any entrepreneur would do well to learn, including understanding why you’re in business and being honest with yourself about what you’re trying to achieve. But my other two main takeaways are;
a) how and why to systemise your business,
b) the 80/20 principle (and a good solid story of how Tim applied it to his business).
A book about positioning your business, so you’re turning customers away rather than constantly having to find them. Delivers some handy advice for any small business owner about niching your business and developing follow-on products, rather than just selling to a customer once. The tips here are straightforward, and Daniel Priestley’s a good author, so it’s also an enjoyable read.
It makes some interesting points about business owners; how we’re all essentially made up of the Managing Director, Entrepreneur and Technician and how those roles are always in conflict—written in an engaging style around a fictional case of a bakery business.
A book by CD Baby’s founder; a company he grew fairly organically and eventually successfully exited. Some great points here about growth, operations and pitfalls when you’re running a business.
